Black Diamond Group Limited

A specialty rental company that leases modular buildings and runs workforce accommodation, with a fast-growing digital booking platform for crew travel.

The business

Black Diamond Group provides specialty rental and industrial services in Canada, the United States and Australia through two segments. Modular Space Solutions (MSS) rents modular buildings such as classrooms, site offices and portable structures, earning recurring rental income plus value-added products and services. Workforce Solutions (WFS) supplies remote workforce accommodation (camps and lodges) and related services to resource, infrastructure and construction projects.

MSS is the steadier, rental-annuity business: in Q2 2026 it generated C$28.6M of rental revenue at 77.9% fleet utilization and an average monthly rate of C$910 per unit. WFS is more project-driven and was expanded by the acquisition of Royal Camp Services Ltd., which lifted segment revenue 55% to C$72.2M in Q2 2026; the company says WFS has over C$2 billion of formal bids outstanding, more than double its current fleet capacity.

The company also owns LodgeLink, a digital marketplace for booking crew travel and accommodation. In Q2 2026, LodgeLink's total trade value rose 69% to C$43.5M and net revenue rose 64% to a record C$5.4M, a small but fast-growing, asset-light part of the group.

The moat

A large owned fleet of modular buildings that earns recurring rental revenue under multi-period contracts, with contracted future rental revenue of C$136.5M at Q2 2026.

Established camp and lodge capacity and relationships in Canadian resource regions, where supplying remote accommodation at scale requires significant owned capacity.

LodgeLink gives Black Diamond a proprietary, asset-light digital channel in crew travel that complements its physical assets.

Free cash flow yield & sustainable growth

Free cash flow yield : ≈1.3%TTM free cash flow C$17.99M (operating cash flow C$109.38M less capex C$91.39M) / market cap approx. C$1.37B (StockAnalysis statistics, Oct 13, 2026)

Operating cash flow was C$109.38M over the trailing twelve months to June 30, 2026, versus C$130.92M in 2025 and C$111.36M in 2024. Capital spending of C$91.39M on a trailing basis left free cash flow of C$17.99M, down 56.42% from the prior-year comparison; free cash flow has been uneven, from C$67.69M in 2023 to C$5.67M in 2024 and C$30.24M in 2025.

Revenue is growing faster than cash flow, up 15.17% to C$508.49M on a trailing basis, helped by acquisitions (C$147.40M of cash acquisitions in 2025) including the contribution from Royal Camp Services. Management expects increased organic capital investment in Canada and the U.S. through 2026 and into 2027, so free cash flow may stay modest while the fleet grows; the company expanded its ABL facility to C$550.0M and reported about C$196.8M of liquidity, with leverage at 2.4x against a 2.0x-3.0x target range.

Valuation & what to watch

At C$19.90 (Oct 13, 2026 close), Black Diamond's market cap of approx. C$1.37B is up about 42% over the past year, and the shares trade at 58.15 times trailing earnings and 37.55 times forward estimates. EV/EBITDA, a more common yardstick for rental businesses, is 14.62 on an enterprise value of about C$1.76B.

Those multiples price in growth that has not yet reached the bottom line: trailing EPS fell to C$0.34 from C$0.54 in 2025, partly because Q2 2026 profit dropped to C$0.9M after a C$3.6M provision for B.C. sales-tax assessments. Trailing free cash flow of C$17.99M equals an FCF yield of only about 1.3% (P/FCF 76.25), because the company is reinvesting heavily in its rental fleet. The valuation leans on WFS converting its large bid pipeline into contracts and on continued LodgeLink growth.

Dividend

Pays C$0.045 per share quarterly (C$0.18 annualized) for a yield of about 0.90%; the quarterly rate rose from C$0.035 to C$0.045 starting with the December 2025 record date (1-year growth 28.57%).

Risks & the bear case

  • Workforce Solutions depends on the timing of Canadian resource and infrastructure projects, which management expects to emerge over a longer period into 2027 and beyond.
  • Rich valuation: a trailing P/E above 58 and a low free-cash-flow yield leave little room for disappointment.
  • Capital intensity: fleet growth consumes most operating cash flow, and net debt rose about 7% in the first half of 2026.
  • Modular demand in U.S. education is subdued due to funding and immigration-policy uncertainty, and contracted future rental revenue fell 11% year over year.
  • One-off items such as the B.C. sales-tax provision can swing quarterly earnings.

Recent developments

2026-07-30: Reported Q2 2026 results: revenue up 23% to C$129.2M, adjusted EBITDA up 4% to C$30.4M, profit of C$0.9M after a C$3.6M B.C. PST provision, and declared a C$0.045 quarterly dividend.

2026-07-30: Expanded its ABL credit facility to C$550.0M from C$425.0M, with about C$196.8M of liquidity.

2026-09-18: Highlighted more than C$2 billion of formal Workforce Solutions bids outstanding, more than double current fleet capacity.

Verdict

Black Diamond combines a steady modular rental business with a cyclical, project-driven accommodation arm and a fast-growing digital booking platform, and it has a sizeable bid pipeline tied to Canadian resource and infrastructure activity. The market has already rewarded that story, and the shares trade at high earnings multiples with a thin free-cash-flow yield and moderate leverage while the company keeps investing in its fleet. It may suit growth-minded investors who expect those bids to convert; value and income investors are likely to find the current price demanding.
