Champion Iron Limited

A Quebec high-purity iron ore producer betting on direct-reduction-grade ore for lower-carbon steelmaking, now in a heavy-investment, low-dividend phase.

The business

Champion Iron produces high-purity iron ore concentrate, principally from its flagship Bloom Lake mine in the Labrador Trough, on the Quebec side of the Quebec-Labrador border. Bloom Lake concentrate grades about 66% Fe, a premium product that steelmakers value because it lowers emissions and impurities compared with standard ore. The company is listed on the TSX and ASX and its fiscal year ends March 31.

Its main growth project, the direct reduction pellet feed (DRPF) plant at Bloom Lake, is designed to upgrade up to half of Bloom Lake's capacity into DR-quality feed grading up to 69% Fe, the input for lower-carbon direct-reduced-iron steelmaking. The project was completed within its approx. C$500M budget, produced its first DR-quality ore in the quarter ended June 30, 2026, and first commercial shipments were expected in calendar Q3 2026.

Champion has also broadened its asset base: in April 2026 it acquired Norway's Rana Gruber, a high-purity iron ore producer of about 1.8M dmt per year, for about US$300M, and it holds 51% of the Kami iron ore project near Bloom Lake alongside Nippon Steel and Sojitz, with a definitive feasibility study expected in the second half of calendar 2026.

The moat

High-grade ore: Bloom Lake's ~66% Fe concentrate and the new DR-grade product command premiums as steelmakers decarbonize.

Long-life, large-scale mining and processing infrastructure in the Labrador Trough with rail and port access that is costly to replicate.

Strategic partnerships (Nippon Steel and Sojitz on Kami) and a second operating jurisdiction in Norway through Rana Gruber diversify its position.

Free cash flow yield & sustainable growth

Free cash flow yield : ≈0.3%TTM free cash flow C$4.20M (operating cash flow C$405.81M less capex C$401.62M) / market cap approx. C$1.49B (StockAnalysis statistics, Oct 13, 2026)

Operating cash flow was C$405.81M over the trailing twelve months to June 30, 2026, versus C$435.93M in fiscal 2026 and C$304.02M in fiscal 2025. Capital spending has absorbed nearly all of it: capex was C$401.62M on a trailing basis and C$413.02M in fiscal 2026, after C$604.03M in fiscal 2025, leaving free cash flow of C$4.20M (TTM), C$22.91M (fiscal 2026) and -C$300.01M (fiscal 2025).

With the C$500M DRPF project now built (cumulative investment C$493.7M at June 30, 2026), capital intensity could ease, but the company also took on a new US$150M term loan for Rana Gruber and cash fell by C$98.2M in the latest quarter to C$198.6M. Available liquidity was C$653.1M, including C$454.5M undrawn on credit facilities. Any free-cash-flow recovery depends on iron ore prices, DR-grade premiums and a smooth ramp-up.

Valuation & what to watch

At C$2.65 (Oct 13, 2026 close), the shares sat at the bottom of their 52-week range of C$2.65 to C$6.14, and market cap had fallen about 36% over the past year to approx. C$1.49B. The stock trades at 14.45 times trailing earnings and 10.07 times forward estimates, while EV/EBITDA is a low 5.64 on an enterprise value of about C$2.72B.

The market's caution reflects a weak latest quarter and the end of the fixed dividend. In Q1 fiscal 2027, EBITDA fell to C$32.8M (a 9% margin) and the company posted a net loss of C$41.5M (EPS -C$0.07) as sales volumes dropped 13% during the DRPF ramp-up and realized prices softened. Trailing free cash flow of C$4.20M equals an FCF yield of only about 0.3%, so the valuation hinges on whether DR-grade sales and Rana Gruber lift cash generation once the investment phase ends.

Dividend

Champion replaced its fixed C$0.10 semi-annual dividend in May 2026 with a variable policy paying 30% to 40% of trailing six-month free cash flow, and declared C$0.02 per share for the year ended March 31, 2026 (paid July 8, 2026). StockAnalysis shows a trailing yield of 4.53% on C$0.12, but that includes a pre-cut C$0.10 payment; future payments will move with free cash flow.

Risks & the bear case

  • Iron ore price exposure: revenue and margins swing with benchmark prices and grade premiums; the latest quarter's net realized price fell 11% quarter over quarter.
  • Execution risk on the DRPF ramp-up and on securing buyers for DR-grade output; only part of near-term capacity is under a commercial agreement.
  • Higher leverage after the Rana Gruber purchase, with net debt of about C$1.22B against a C$1.49B market cap.
  • Dividend is now variable and tied to free cash flow, which has been close to zero, so income could stay low for some time.
  • Kami is still pre-development; its feasibility study, capital cost and financing remain open questions.
  • Operations in remote northern Quebec and Norway face weather, logistics, labour and cost-inflation pressures.

Recent developments

2026-04: Completed the roughly US$300M acquisition of Norway's Rana Gruber, funded with a new US$150M term loan, a US$100M private placement from CDPQ and cash on hand.

2026-05-27: Reported fiscal Q4 2026 results and replaced its fixed dividend with a variable policy of 30% to 40% of trailing six-month free cash flow, declaring C$0.02 per share.

2026-07-29: Reported Q1 fiscal 2027 results: production up 12% to 3.94M wmt, sales down 13%, revenue of C$356.9M and a net loss of C$41.5M; the DRPF project was completed within budget and produced its first DR-quality ore.

Verdict

Champion Iron owns premium, long-life iron ore assets and has just finished a major project aimed at the growing market for lower-carbon steelmaking feed, while adding production in Norway. The cost of that growth shows up as near-zero trailing free cash flow, higher debt, a loss-making latest quarter and a much smaller variable dividend, and the shares have fallen to a 52-week low. Investors attracted by the DR-grade story are taking on commodity-price and ramp-up risk; those seeking dependable income should note the dividend is no longer fixed.
