Cronos Group Inc.
Cash-rich Canadian cannabis company behind Spinach and PEACE NATURALS that has reached operating profitability, with most of its market value backed by cash and investments.
The business
Cronos Group is a cannabinoid company that sells adult-use and medical cannabis products, primarily in Canada, Israel and a growing set of international markets led by Germany. Its main brands are Spinach in the Canadian adult-use market and PEACE NATURALS in medical and international channels. The company reports in U.S. dollars and is listed on both the TSX and Nasdaq.
Growth has picked up sharply. Q2 2026 net revenue was US$53.0M, up 58% year over year (51% in constant currency), and gross margin widened to 54% from 43%. Spinach held the No. 1 share in Canadian vapes and edibles. In Israel, revenue rose 60% to US$15.0M, and other international markets rose 88% to US$9.3M on demand for PEACE NATURALS in Germany. Cronos has also taken majority board control of Cronos GrowCo, which is expanding its Kingsville cultivation facility, and agreed to acquire Netherlands-based CanAdelaar B.V., with closing expected in the second half of 2026.
The balance sheet is the defining feature. At June 30, 2026, Cronos held US$827.0M in cash, short-term investments and interest-bearing deposits, against almost no debt. That legacy comes largely from Altria's 2018-2019 investment, and Altria remains a major shareholder. The company is using some of that cash to buy back shares: it repurchased 12.3 million shares in the first half of 2026, reducing its share count to about 370.7 million.
The moat
Leading brand positions in Canada: Spinach is the No. 1 brand in Canadian vapes and edibles, in a fragmented, heavily regulated market where shelf space and brand recognition matter.
An exceptionally strong balance sheet, with about US$827M in cash and investments and minimal debt, that lets Cronos invest, buy back shares and make acquisitions while many peers struggle with leverage.
An established medical cannabis export platform (PEACE NATURALS) in Israel and Germany, which require GMP-grade supply chains and regulatory approvals that are hard to replicate quickly.

Free cash flow yield & sustainable growth
Free cash flow yield : ≈4.2%TTM free cash flow C$70.74M (US$49.82M) / market cap C$1.67B (stockanalysis, Oct 13, 2026)
Cronos's cash flow has improved steadily. Free cash flow was -US$164.8M in 2021, -US$92.4M in 2022, -US$45.3M in 2023, US$6.4M in 2024 and US$0.15M in 2025, and it is US$49.8M on a trailing basis. Trailing operating cash flow reached US$60.1M against modest capex of US$10.2M. Operating income turned positive in Q2 2026 (about US$8.2M) after several loss-making quarters, and adjusted EBITDA rose to US$13.1M from US$1.7M.
Cronos has paired that improvement with share repurchases (about US$41.6M trailing). Further growth depends on Canadian brand momentum, continued medical export growth into Germany and Israel, the GrowCo capacity expansion and closing the CanAdelaar acquisition. Israeli trade-remedy action against Canadian medical cannabis imports is a direct threat to one of its fastest-growing markets.
Valuation & what to watch
At C$4.54 (October 13, 2026), Cronos has a market cap of about C$1.67B but an enterprise value of only about C$612M, because roughly C$1.13B of net cash (about C$3.07 per share) backs most of the share price. The trailing P/E of about 17.3x overstates how much investors pay for the operating business, since trailing net income is boosted by interest income and foreign-exchange gains on the cash pile.
Measured against the operating business, the valuation is more meaningful. Trailing free cash flow of about C$70.7M (US$49.8M) is a free-cash-flow yield of roughly 4.2% on market cap, and much higher on enterprise value. The open question is whether the recent jump in revenue and gross margin can last. If it does, the market is valuing the operating company at a modest multiple of its emerging cash flow.
Dividend
Cronos does not pay a dividend; it returns capital through share repurchases (12.3 million shares, about US$32.9M, bought back in the first half of 2026) and retains a large cash reserve.
Risks & the bear case
- Regulatory risk across every market: cannabis rules, excise taxes and pricing in Canada, medical-export rules and Israeli anti-dumping investigations into Canadian medical cannabis imports (a new investigation was opened on August 5, 2026).
- Earnings quality: a significant part of net income has come from interest and foreign-currency gains on cash rather than core operations, so reported EPS can swing.
- Industry pricing pressure: the Canadian cannabis market remains oversupplied and highly competitive, which can erode margins and brand share.
- Capital-allocation risk: a large cash pile creates the possibility of value-destroying acquisitions or investments, a pattern seen in the sector.
- U.S. policy uncertainty: rescheduling of certain medical marijuana categories to Schedule III (April 2026) does not legalize interstate commerce, and U.S. opportunities remain limited and uncertain.

Verdict
Cronos has moved from a cash-burning cannabis story to a profitable, growing operator with leading Canadian brands, and most of its market value is still backed by net cash. That gives investors a cushion that few cannabis stocks offer. The main questions are whether the growth and margin gains last, whether the Israeli trade action holds back the export business, and how management deploys the cash pile. The stock fits investors who want cannabis exposure with balance-sheet protection and who accept regulatory and sector volatility. It pays no dividend.
