Magellan Aerospace Corporation

Ontario-based maker of aeroengine and aerostructure parts for commercial and defence aircraft, riding an aerospace recovery while working through heavy capital spending and a legacy-liability subsidiary bankruptcy.

The business

Magellan Aerospace is a diversified supplier of components to the global aerospace industry. Through its subsidiaries, a controlled entity and a joint venture, it designs, engineers and manufactures aeroengine and aerostructure components, including castings, engine parts and narrow-body and wide-body airframe parts. It also makes advanced products for defence and space and supports the aftermarket with spare parts and repair-and-overhaul (MRO) services.

The company reports a single Aerospace segment, but its revenue is spread across three regions. In Q2 2026 it booked C$115.8M in Canada, C$95.0M in the United States and C$94.8M in Europe. In the first six months of 2026, commercial markets made up 66.4% of revenue and defence markets 33.6%. That makes Magellan a play on Airbus and Boeing build rates and on rising defence budgets.

Defence is a growing part of the story. In July 2026 Magellan won a Government of Canada contract to produce the M-72 Light Anti-Tank Weapon under the Munitions Supply Program. It also signed an MOU with GE Canada to set up Canadian MRO capability for the F414 engine, which would apply if Canada buys the Saab Gripen fighter. Most of Magellan's revenue still depends on commercial aircraft production, which remains limited by industry-wide supply-chain constraints.

The moat

Long-term, qualified positions on major engine and airframe programs. Aerospace parts certification and customer qualification take years, which creates high switching costs.

Specialized manufacturing capabilities such as castings, engine components and complex aerostructures that few suppliers can match at scale.

A growing defence and sovereign-capability role in Canada (the M-72 munitions contract and the potential F414 MRO centre) that ties the company to multi-year government programs.

Free cash flow yield & sustainable growth

Free cash flow yield : ≈-1.3%TTM free cash flow -C$23.03M / market cap C$1.80B (stockanalysis, Oct 13, 2026)

Free cash flow has swung widely: C$35.1M in 2022, -C$36.5M in 2023, C$63.2M in 2024 and C$27.6M in 2025, and it is -C$23.0M on a trailing basis. Trailing operating cash flow fell to C$35.7M, while capital expenditures rose to C$58.8M from C$51.0M in fiscal 2025.

Management attributes the weak cash conversion mainly to working capital. In Q2 2026, changes in non-cash working capital used C$25.6M as receivables, contract assets and inventory grew with higher production. If revenue growth holds (22.3% in Q2) and working capital normalizes, cash flow should recover. Ongoing capex commitments (C$31.7M of capital assets contracted at June 30, 2026) mean the recovery may come gradually.

Valuation & what to watch

At C$31.49 (October 13, 2026), Magellan trades at about 30.2x trailing earnings and 20.6x forward earnings, with an enterprise value of roughly C$1.86B. That is a full multiple for a mid-sized aerospace parts supplier. It reflects the strong earnings recovery: Q2 2026 net income was C$19.8M versus C$5.4M a year earlier, and adjusted EBITDA roughly doubled to C$43.0M.

On cash flow the stock looks less attractive. Trailing free cash flow is negative (about -C$23.0M), so the free-cash-flow yield is roughly -1.3%. Working capital is absorbing cash as production ramps, and capital spending has risen. The current price assumes that earnings growth will eventually turn into cash; investors are paying for that recovery in advance.

Dividend

Pays a quarterly dividend of C$0.05 per share (C$0.20 annualized), for a yield of about 0.64% at C$31.49. The payout ratio is about 19% of earnings. The quarterly rate was raised from C$0.025 to C$0.05 in 2025.

Risks & the bear case

  • Commercial aerospace concentration: about two-thirds of revenue comes from commercial markets, so Airbus/Boeing production rates and supply-chain bottlenecks (engines, castings, titanium, labour) drive results.
  • Weak cash conversion: trailing free cash flow is negative because working capital and capex absorb cash, even as reported earnings rise.
  • Legacy environmental liabilities: subsidiary Magellan Aerospace, Middletown, Inc. filed for Chapter 11 on July 22, 2026 after legal and environmental costs strained its liquidity. A Magellan affiliate is providing up to US$20M of DIP financing, and the final cost remains uncertain.
  • Valuation: at about 30x trailing earnings, the shares leave little room for operational setbacks or delays in defence programs.
  • Some defence opportunities depend on government decisions; the F414 MRO MOU applies only if Canada proceeds with the Saab Gripen.

Recent developments

2026-06-11: Renewed its normal course issuer bid, allowing repurchase of up to 2,853,953 shares between June 15, 2026 and June 14, 2027.

2026-07-20: Awarded a Government of Canada contract to produce the M-72 Light Anti-Tank Weapon under Canada's Munitions Supply Program.

2026-07-22: Signed an MOU with GE Canada for Canadian F414-GE-39E engine MRO capability, which would apply if Canada acquires the Saab Gripen. The same day, subsidiary Middletown filed for voluntary Chapter 11 relief over legacy environmental liabilities.

2026-08-12: Reported Q2 2026 revenue of C$305.6M (+22.3%), net income of C$19.8M (C$0.35/share) and adjusted EBITDA of C$43.0M (+103.4%).

Verdict

Magellan's operations are clearly improving. Revenue is growing at double-digit rates, margins are expanding and the defence pipeline is building. But the shares already price in much of that at about 30x trailing earnings, and the business is not yet producing free cash. The Middletown Chapter 11 adds legacy-liability uncertainty that should be resolved over time. For investors who believe in the multi-year aerospace and defence upcycle, this is a quality small-cap supplier to watch. Cash-focused investors may want to see working capital turn and free cash flow return to positive before committing.
