PHX Energy Services Corp.

Calgary-based directional-drilling technology specialist earning most of its revenue in the U.S., with the largest independent rotary-steerable fleet in North America and a 6% dividend yield.

The business

PHX Energy Services provides horizontal and directional drilling services to oil and gas producers, mainly in the United States and Canada. It supplies the equipment, personnel and operational support used to steer a well, and also rents and sells drilling motors, particularly its proprietary Atlas motors. In Q2 2026 the U.S. division produced $127.8M of the $178.9M consolidated revenue, about 71%, and Canada produced $51.1M.

The company competes on technology. PHX says it has the largest independent rotary steerable system (RSS) fleet in North America, with 116 RSS tools across both PowerDrive Orbit and iCruise systems, about 967 Atlas motors and 127 Velocity Real-Time systems. RSS work, a premium, higher-margin service, reached a record 21% of consolidated activity in Q2 2026, and the Atlas motor rental business added $15.4M of revenue in the quarter.

Its fortunes follow North American drilling activity. In Q2 2026 the U.S. division held its operating days roughly flat (down 1%) while the U.S. industry rig count fell 4%, and Canadian operating days rose 24%. Management said in August that activity was trending upward in the third quarter on firmer commodity prices and rising rig counts.

The moat

Its large independent RSS fleet with proprietary Real-Time RSS Communications technology lets PHX offer premium steering services that many smaller directional drillers cannot.

Proprietary Atlas motors and Velocity systems give it in-house technology and a separate rental revenue stream, rather than relying only on third-party tools.

It has established relationships with U.S. and Canadian operators and a track record of holding market share when industry activity falls.

Free cash flow yield & sustainable growth

Free cash flow yield : ≈-0.9%FCF TTM -$5.68M (operating cash flow $64.73M less gross capex $70.41M, to Jun 30, 2026; excludes $45.88M equipment-disposal proceeds) / market cap ~$602.67M, StockAnalysis, Oct 13, 2026

Trailing operating cash flow was $64.7M against $70.4M of gross capital spending, down from $73.2M and $72.3M in fiscal 2025 and $96.9M and $83.3M in fiscal 2024. Dividends paid over the trailing twelve months ($45.4M) exceeded operating cash flow less gross capex, and the gap was bridged by equipment-disposal proceeds and borrowing. Company-defined net debt rose to $43.9M at June 30, 2026 from $6.4M at December 31, 2025.

Spending is going up deliberately. In June 2026 the board raised the 2026 capital budget from $65M to $80M, about 60% of it for growth, mainly to expand the RSS fleet. If activity keeps improving, as management signalled for Q3, those investments should lift operating days and margins. If the cycle stalls, higher capex plus a $0.80 dividend would keep pushing leverage up.

Valuation & what to watch

At $13.17, PHX trades at about 13.9x trailing earnings and 10.0x forward earnings, 0.85x sales and about 7.3x EV/EBITDA, with an enterprise value of roughly $676M. The shares have risen about 74% over the past year as investors priced in a recovery in drilling activity, so the stock is no longer as deeply discounted as it was.

Free cash flow complicates the picture. On StockAnalysis's definition (operating cash flow minus gross capex), trailing free cash flow was slightly negative at -$5.7M, a -0.9% yield. But PHX regularly receives large proceeds when operators reimburse it for equipment lost downhole ($45.9M TTM). Net of those, the company reports much lower net capex: just $1.9M in Q2 2026, with $20.5M of 'excess cash flow' for the quarter. Investors should decide which lens they trust, because the dividend looks well covered on one and uncovered on the other.

Dividend

PHX pays a quarterly dividend of $0.20 per share (CAD), or $0.80 annualized, for a yield of about 6.1% at $13.17. StockAnalysis puts the payout ratio near 99% of earnings, and the company frames the dividend within its Return of Capital Strategy alongside opportunistic share buybacks.

Risks & the bear case

  • Cyclical exposure. Revenue and margins depend on North American drilling activity, which in turn follows oil and gas prices and producer budgets.
  • Dividend coverage. The payout is close to 100% of earnings, and dividends exceeded operating cash flow less gross capex over the trailing year, so coverage relies on equipment-loss reimbursements and borrowing.
  • Leverage is rising. Net debt climbed sharply in the first half of 2026 as capex rose, and further increases are possible with the bigger 2026 budget.
  • Trade and tariff uncertainty. Management flags tariffs and inflation as supply-chain and cost risks; new tariffs or trade changes could raise equipment costs.
  • Concentration in the U.S. market, where about 71% of revenue is earned, exposes PHX to U.S. rig-count swings and currency moves.

Recent developments

2026-08-04: Q2 2026 results showed record second-quarter revenue of $178.9M (up 7%), adjusted EBITDA of $33.0M (up 20%) and earnings of $11.0M, or $0.21 per share, with record RSS activity.

2026-08-13: PHX received TSX approval to renew its normal course issuer bid.

2026-09-15: PHX declared its regular quarterly dividend of $0.20 per share.

Verdict

PHX is a technology-led directional driller with record RSS activity, a strong U.S. position and a 6% dividend. It is leaning into a recovery by raising capex, and management says activity is improving. After a roughly 74% run in the share price, the valuation is moderate rather than cheap. The dividend is fully paid out on earnings and depends on equipment-loss proceeds and some borrowing to be covered on a cash basis. It suits income-oriented investors who are comfortable with oilfield-services cyclicality and who believe the drilling upturn will last. A downturn would test both the balance sheet and the payout.
