Shopify Inc.

The commerce operating system for millions of merchants — high growth, now profitable and free-cash-flow positive.

The business

Shopify provides the software that lets businesses sell online and in person — storefronts, checkout, and a fast-growing set of merchant services (Shopify Payments, Capital, shipping, and point-of-sale). It reports in U.S. dollars.

Revenue comes in two streams: Subscription Solutions (recurring plan fees) and the larger, faster-growing Merchant Solutions, which scales with the gross merchandise volume (GMV) flowing through the platform.

The moat

A large merchant base, an app/partner ecosystem, and deep payments integration create switching costs and a network effect.

Owning the payments and financial-services layer lets Shopify monetize merchant growth well beyond simple subscription fees.

Free cash flow yield & sustainable growth

Free cash flow yield : ≈1.3%TTM FCF ≈US$2.1B ÷ ≈US$161B market cap

Shopify is now genuinely free-cash-flow positive — roughly US$2.1B of trailing free cash flow (operating cash flow ≈ US$2.15B against minimal capex) — but on a market cap in the ~US$160–220B range that is only a ~1–1.5% FCF yield. Almost all of the value sits in future growth, not today's cash.

That is the central tension: such a low FCF yield is only justified if growth stays high and free-cash-flow margins keep widening. With revenue compounding ~30%+ and FCF margin around 15%, the trajectory supports it — but any deceleration compresses both the multiple and the implied yield quickly, as the post-Q1 selloff showed.

Sustainable growth: durable so long as merchant GMV gains and payments/financial-services monetization continue; the key sensitivity is consumer spending, which flows straight through to Merchant Solutions revenue.

Valuation & what to watch

Shopify trades on a premium growth multiple (typically discussed on price-to-sales and forward earnings rather than trailing P/E), reflecting 30%+ revenue growth and improving free-cash-flow margins.

The key valuation risk is durability: the multiple assumes growth and margin expansion continue. Any deceleration in GMV or consumer spending tends to compress the multiple quickly — the stock fell sharply after Q1 despite a beat.

Dividend

None — Shopify does not pay a dividend and reinvests its growing free cash flow into the platform and merchant services.

Risks & the bear case

  • GMV is tied to consumer spending; a retail slowdown flows straight through to Merchant Solutions revenue.
  • A rich valuation leaves little room for growth disappointment, as the post-Q1 selloff showed.
  • Competition from other commerce and payments platforms is intense.
  • Currency and macro swings affect a globally-exposed, USD-reporting business.

Recent developments

Q1 FY2026 revenue grew 34% to US$3.17B with GMV crossing US$100B and free cash flow of US$476M; management guided Q2 revenue to high-twenties percentage growth. Q2 results are due August 5, 2026.

Verdict

A genuine category leader that has made the hard pivot from 'growth at any cost' to profitable, cash-generative growth. The bull case is durable share gains and payments monetization; the bear case is the valuation, which punishes any slowdown. Conviction: high-quality business, but a name where entry price and growth durability drive the outcome.
