TSX Jumps Over 260 Points as Oil Retreats and Tech Rebounds

Canada's benchmark index rallied July 9 as crude prices slid and semiconductor stocks recovered, with U.S. markets posting broad gains alongside it.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index climbed 264.65 points to close at 35,200.45 on July 9, 2026, as falling oil prices and a rebound in semiconductor stocks lifted the broader market.

August crude fell US$1.44 to US$72.08 a barrel, while Brent crude dropped 2.2% to US$76.30. Gains on the TSX were broad-based, coinciding with a bounce back in chipmakers after weeks of weakness in the sector.

U.S. markets follow suit

Major U.S. indexes rallied alongside Toronto. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 139.02 points, the S&P 500 gained 60.93, and the Nasdaq Composite rose 336.24. This is general market news and information, not individualized investment advice.
