First Quantum Minerals
A global copper producer rebuilding cash generation as it fights to restart its idled Cobre Panama mine.
L'entreprise
First Quantum is a Canadian-based copper miner whose principal operating assets are the Kansanshi and Sentinel mines in Zambia, alongside nickel and smaller operations. Copper drives the large majority of revenue.
Its largest single asset, the giant Cobre Panama mine, was ordered shut in late 2023 after a dispute with the Panamanian government and courts, removing roughly 40% of prior copper output and dominating the investment story ever since.
Les avantages concurrentiels
Owns tier-one, long-life copper orebodies at scale; deposits of this size are scarce and effectively irreplaceable.
Deep operating and mine-building know-how. But the moat is heavily undercut by geopolitical and permitting exposure, most visibly the Cobre Panama shutdown, plus concentration risk in Zambia.

Aperçu financier
Période déclarée la plus récente : Q2 FY2026 (ended Jun 30, 2026). Les chiffres reflètent la date de révision — confirmez les chiffres actuels avant d'agir.
| Revenue (TTM, Jun 2026) | US$5,747M |
| FY2025 revenue | US$5,237M |
| Net loss (TTM) | -US$83M |
| Operating cash flow (TTM) | US$1,709M |
| Free cash flow (TTM) | US$496M |

Rendement du flux de trésorerie disponible et croissance durable
Rendement du flux de trésorerie disponible : ≈2.1% (est.)Trailing free cash flow of about US$496M against a market cap of roughly C$32.2B (~US$23.5B) implies an FCF yield near 2.1%.
Free cash flow is positive but modest and volatile: about US$496M trailing versus US$858M in FY2025, pressured by high sustaining capital and debt service.
Sustainable growth depends far more on a Cobre Panama restart and Zambian expansion than on organic reinvestment; without Panama, FCF growth is capped and balance-sheet deleveraging stays slow.

Valorisation et points à surveiller
Trades near a C$32B market cap with no meaningful P/E given the net loss; the stock is priced substantially on the option value of a Cobre Panama restart and roughly doubled over the past year on that optimism.
On trailing free cash flow the FCF yield is only about 2%, so today's price already discounts a favourable Panama outcome. A permanent closure would leave the valuation looking rich.
Dividende
No meaningful dividend currently; the payout was cut to a token level to preserve cash while Cobre Panama is idle and debt is elevated.
Risques et scénario baissier
- Cobre Panama remains shut with an uncertain path to restart; a permanent closure is a material downside scenario.
- High debt load relative to earnings, and copper-price sensitivity that swings cash flow sharply.
- Concentration in Zambia and Panama exposes it to resource nationalism, tax and permitting risk.
Faits récents
FY2025 revenue was US$5.2B with a small net loss; trailing-twelve-month revenue has since risen toward US$5.7B on firmer copper prices and steady Zambian output.
Shares have rallied strongly (up roughly 90% over the past year) on restart optimism and copper strength, closing around C$42 on Aug 4, 2026.
Verdict
First Quantum is a high-beta bet on copper and on a single binary catalyst: getting Cobre Panama back online. The Zambian operations generate real cash and the long-term copper thesis is sound, but with a ~2% trailing FCF yield, a net loss, and elevated debt, much of the good news is already priced in. It suits investors comfortable with geopolitical and commodity volatility, not those seeking steady cash returns. Publisher, not an adviser.
